Port Blair is the largest and the capital city of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It has the maximum amount of population on these islands. The reason why couples should visit it that this area has a lot of historical importance.
The British had built prisons on this island and had imprisoned a lot many freedom fighters during the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 and Indian Independence movement. The Cellular Jail is also known as Kala Paani was constructed by the British to exile political prisoners here and they put them here under isolation. Prominent freedom fighters like Batukeshwar Dutt, Yogendra Shukla and many others were imprisoned here. The monument was declared as a national monument in 1969.
This monument and the museum give us the picture of the atrocities committed during the British colonial rule and pay homage to the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters in the quest for the country’s independence. The islands were invaded by Japan during the World War 2 and they took them from the control of British. However the British resumed control of these islands at the end of the war. The Neil Island is home to a number of unexplored and deserted beaches quite different from the other beaches on the islands.
