Welcome to Barren Island, South Asia’s only active volcano situated in the Andaman sea, around 138 km from Port Blair.
This active volcano has been recorded to be active since 1787 with a few episodes of eruptions, the recent one being in January 2017.
The name ‘Barren island’ comes rightly so from the word ‘barren’ since the island is uninhabited by humans apart from a small population of bats, goats and bird species.
How to get there?
You can visit the island by private boats with a permit from the forest department. It takes around 4-5 hours to reach the island from Havelock.
On reaching Barren island?
You are not allowed to get on the island for the obvious reasons of safety. But even without getting on the island, you will get an electrifying feel staring at the volcano which occasionally throws fumes of thick smoke and ashes up in the air.
Pros of the trip:
Apart from the exhilarating view of the island, waters around the Barren island are one of the best scuba diving destinations in the world.
Manta rays, crystal clear blue waters, basalt rock formations, vibrant coral reefs and a terrain of past lava flows give a completely spectacular experience.
Cons:
This trip can be expensive as you have to use private boats to reach there.
